Travel Nurse Housing in Lawton: A 13-Week Assignment Guide

Your recruiter pitched a 13-week contract at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. The pay package looks reasonable, the stipend covers housing, and you have done assignments at smaller markets before. Now you are trying to figure out the actual logistics of living in Lawton, Oklahoma for three months.

We have hosted dozens of travel nurses and traveling allied health professionals in Lawton. The pattern questions are the same. This is the honest guide.

The hospitals you might be at

The two main inpatient facilities in the area:

Comanche County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) is the main civilian hospital in Lawton. ~280 beds, full Level III trauma. The largest employer of travel nurses in the market.

Reynolds Army Community Hospital at Fort Sill is the on-post military hospital. It primarily uses GS or contracted civilian staff rather than travel-nurse agency contracts, but contract roles do come through.

Smaller facilities — Lawton Indian Hospital, the surrounding clinics, and the longer-term care facilities — also occasionally take travelers.

The commute from most Lawton neighborhoods to CCMH is 10-15 minutes. Fort Sill is 5-10 minutes from north Lawton. There is no neighborhood in town where you would routinely have a 30+ minute commute to either.

The stipend math, honestly

GSA per diem for Lawton sets the framework most agencies use for tax-free stipend calculations. The current Lawton per diem is on the lower end of US markets — it is a smaller city in a lower-cost region. Your gross stipend per week looks lower than what you might see for an assignment in San Diego or Boston.

The flip side is that actual cost of living is much lower. A furnished housing budget that would buy you a studio in a coastal market gets you a full house in Lawton. Most travelers we host end up netting MORE on the stipend at this assignment than they did on higher-stipend assignments in expensive cities — because the rent line is so much lower.

A typical 13-week travel nurse housing budget breaks down something like this:

Furnished 1-2 bedroom unit: $1,400-1,800 per month all-in
Utilities: included
Internet: included
Parking: free (this is Oklahoma, parking is free everywhere)

That leaves real margin against a stipend designed for higher-cost markets.

Housing options ranked, honestly

Furnished rentals (the option we run). Built for stays of 30+ days, full kitchen, washer and dryer, real bed, fast internet, locked-in monthly rate. Best for solo travelers or travelers with a partner who is along for the ride.

Extended-stay hotels (Residence Inn, Candlewood Suites, etc.). Functional. The kitchens are small and the units are not really living spaces. Fine for someone who is essentially using the room as a base between shifts and does not cook. For 13 weeks of real life, most nurses we have hosted who tried this option switched to a furnished house after the first month.

Furnished apartments at standard apartment complexes. Hit or miss in Lawton. The corporate housing setup that works in Dallas or Austin has not really arrived in this market. Some places will rent month-to-month furnished, but the quality varies.

Subletting a long-term lease. Possible if you have local connections, but the timelines rarely work for a 13-week assignment.

Long-term traditional rental. A real apartment or house lease in Lawton is usually 12 months. Some landlords will do shorter for a premium. For 13 weeks the math almost never beats a furnished month-to-month rental.

A bedroom in someone else's house (roommate-style). Cheap, available on Facebook groups, varies wildly in quality. Most professional travelers we have hosted do not want to roll the dice on this.

The location question

Lawton is small enough that "neighborhood choice" is less critical than in bigger markets. That said:

North Lawton / near Fort Sill is convenient if your hospital is CCMH or if your contract is at Reynolds. Older neighborhoods, mostly fine, some pockets are sketchier than others. Driveway / yard access is uneven.

West Lawton has newer housing stock and is what most of our portfolio is in. Easy access to CCMH, the highway, and out to the Wichita Mountains for weekend hikes.

Elgin (20 minutes east) is a small town with newer homes and a quieter feel. The commute is real but not heavy.

Cache (20 minutes west) is similar to Elgin — quiet, mostly residential, good for someone who wants to hike on weekends.

For a 13-week assignment we would lean West Lawton for first-time travelers who do not know the market yet. You can branch out for the second contract if you come back.

What to actually pack

Travel nurse packing lists are well-covered elsewhere. The Lawton-specific notes:

A car is non-negotiable. Public transit does not really exist in Lawton. Uber and Lyft work but are not reliable for a 0530 shift start.
Layers for changing weather. Oklahoma weather is dramatic — 75°F and sunny on Monday, 35°F and sleet on Tuesday is a real thing in spring and fall.
Sun gear. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat. The sun is intense.
Cold-weather gear if you are arriving October-March. Winter is short but real, and ice storms happen.
Workout clothes for outside use. The Wichita Mountains and the trail networks around Lawton are great if you hike or run.
Scrubs you have already worn. New ones never feel right in the first week of an assignment.

The boring tax piece

To qualify for tax-free housing stipends you must maintain a legitimate tax home elsewhere and you must not be in one assignment location for too long without a break. We are not your tax advisor. Talk to a CPA who works with travel nurses (there are several specialty firms — Travel Nurse Tax, Joseph Smith, etc.). The IRS audits travel nurses more frequently than other professions because the stipend math is generous.

For our housing side: we issue clean monthly invoices with rent broken out separately from cleaning and any extras. If your CPA needs specific documentation we can usually accommodate.
